Five Reasons Why You Need to Take Time Out to Reinvigorate
He that can take rest is greater than he that can take cities. – Benjamin Franklin
- Thou Shalt Rest, It’s Biblical!
Everyone knows that the Bible calls for a day of rest. But did you know Moses was instructed to inform the Israelites that anyone who worked on that day would be put to death? This extended to sons, daughters, strangers, servants, oxen, livestock, and even donkeys! Fields used for crops and feeding livestock were rotated and rested to allow the land time to recover and avoid barrenness. Dirt needs to rest, don’t you?
- You Have To!
It’s a physical inevitability that you must rest or experience catastrophic health problems caused by exhaustion. We constantly push the limits of our bodies in order to accomplish tasks seen as more important and urgent than resting. Workaholics often see rest as a weakness rather than realizing that if they don’t rest they will actually get less work done due to illnesses brought on by sleep deprivation. Whoever said, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” probably didn’t realize they were accelerating that end result.
- To Reinvigorate Your Mental Focus
If you have ever worked all night to finish a project, then returned to the project after resting, you probably spotted careless mistakes that made you wonder, “What was I thinking?” The answer is, you weren’t. The same problem arises when you routinely burn the candle at both ends and the middle. Clear mental focus elevates your game and helps you avoid costly mistakes.
- To Reinvigorate Your Physical Energy
When you take time to rest, it reinvigorates your physical energy. You’ll discover that you get much more done in less time. Part of the reason is because you are not dragging yourself through tasks as if you were about to drop. You don’t have to stop repeatedly to try to catch your snap. Your stress level is greatly reduced because your not falling behind, or worse, asleep.
- To Reinvigorate Your Perspective
Taking time out from the daily grind gives you the opportunity to slow down and smell the roses. Your attitude about life, and all that comes with it, improves tremendously when you take the pressure off. When you are reinvigorated, you have time to reevaluate your priorities and goals. Even better, you get the chance to celebrate the accomplishments that you expended all that energy to achieve.
